Julian Van Der Moere and Gareth Kaye
a document, itself
February 17 - March 3, 2018
A Document, Itself, an exhibition of new work by Chicago based artists Julian Van Der Moere and Gareth Kaye, explores the relation and production of information, histories and images as ways of legitimizing, expanding, or complicating the spectator’s relationships with the limits of (in)visibility, systems of knowledge, and our understanding of how spaces are constructed and presented. Exploring the spatial and representative contractions and distances that are the base of object/subject relationships in art each artist seeks to utilize a formal process oriented schema challenging the notions of where images, begin, end, and exist between the two. Each artist’s work looks to a perceptual horizon, or frame of knowing, simultaneously pointing towards the limit and at the possibility of a beyond. Creating images through myriad mark making techniques, Van Der Moere and Kaye each highlight the operations, memories, and gestures that are invested into materials and objects, which forms the basis of information that comes to constitute an object to be a document itself.
